The BDIH is a non-profit association with more than 450 members in the segment of healthcare products. More than 250 license holders with 400 brands in 28 countries have opted for the BDIH-Standard für Kontrollierte Naturkosmetik (standard for certified organic cosmetics) established in 2001, and thus for the strict regulations for the entire manufacturing process including the procurement of raw materials and ethical aspects. BDIH therefore also has offices in Tokyo, Seoul and Milan. Approximately 12.500 certified products worldwide have been licensed with the BDIH-label.
BDIH is a founding member of the international non-profit association COSMOS-standard AISBL, based in Brussels. Under this umbrella organization the established member organizations BDIH, COSMEBIO, ECOCERT, ICEA and SOIL ASSOCIATION, which have to date certified more than 50.000 products worldwide, guarantee corresponding quality control processes and a joint, internationally approved standard for natural and organic cosmetics with transparent and distinct criteria for natural and organic cosmetics and raw materials. Since the beginning of 2017, the COSMOS-standard is the obligatory certifiying foundation for all products to be examined, already applicable to more than 25.000 products and raw materials.
COSMEBIO is the French Professional Association for Ecological and Organic Cosmetics, whose mission is to promote the know-how of its members and organic cosmetics towards consumers and professionals in France and worldwide. It federates all the key players of the field: suppliers of ingredients, cosmetic laboratories, contract manufacturers, retailers with own brands and today represents nearly 400 companies. COSMEBIO is also the owner of the label which gives consumers guarantees regarding the nature and the quality of the products. COSMEBIO is a founding member of the European harmonised COSMOS-standard.
The GfaW Gesellschaft für angewandte Wirtschaftsethik has been issuing the CSE Certified Sustainable Economics Label since 2012. As the strictest certification system in the area of sustainability, CSE has been established as an important deciding feature for consumers at the point of sale. Upon certification according to CSE-standard, the quality label „CSE – geprüft nachhaltiges Unternehmen“ is awarded, which can be applied to the packaging, similar to other product labels. Aside from the minimum requirement of compliance to ISO 14001, these companies fulfill additional strict criteria in the segments of ecology (e.g. green electricity), social issues (z.B. humanitarian rights, family-friendly working hours) and economics (reinvestments in sustainability, ethical investors).

ECOCERT is a private and independent certification organization which evolved in the 80s from the French organic movement. Today ECOCERT, represented in more than 85 countries on 5 continents, is one of the leading organizations for certifying organic products. ECOCERT Greenlife is one of the 30 subsidiaries of the ECOCERT Group, specialized in the certification of non-food products. Through continuous research and development, ECOCERT Greenlife has set standards for the following domains: natural and organic cosmetics, textiles, home fragrances, detergents, spas and pet care, implementing its long time experience in organic agriculture. ECOCERT Greenlife certifies more than 1200 cosmetic companies with appr. 21000 products in more than 45 countries. ECOCERT Greenlife belongs to the founding members of the European Cosmetics COSMOS Standard.
Fair for Life
The Fair for Life Programme offers two certification options: For Life – certification programme for corporate social responsibility and Fair for Life – certification programme for fair trade and responsible certification of supply chains.
The aim is to improve the lives and livelihoods of marginalised producers on all continents, in all societies and in all industries. Producers, manufactures, handlers and brand holders take their part in the global responsibility created by global markets. In addition to social responsibility and fair trade criteria strict environmental criteria are part of the Programme.
NATRUE, the International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association, was founded in 2007 by pioneers of the segment to promote and protect authentic natural and organic cosmetics in a dynamic, but officially undefined sector within a tightly regulated industry – for the benefit of consumers worldwide. Based in Brussels, NATRUE has three main activities: Advocacy – working hand-in-hand with the EU and international decision-makers to ensure that appropriate regulatory measures are adopted in the context of evolving and emerging regulations. The NATRUE Label – in the absence of a strict international definition of natural and organic cosmetics – is the DNA of the ethics and values driving the organization. Research – involvement in international projects addressing scientific and regulatory challenges and opportunities for the sector in areas such as raw materials, packaging and packaging materials.
NCS Natural Cosmetics Standard
The GfaW Gesellschaft für angewandte Wirtschaftsethik has issued the product certification NCS for organic cosmetics independent of other associations since 2013. Aside from specifications such as “kbA“ for specific natural ingredients, GMO-free production, etc., the NCS-standard also requires ecological packaging. Within the NCS-certification there are several labeling options: NCS = products comply with the NCS-standard – NCS Organic Quality = products comply with the NCS-standard and at least 95 % are from organic farming – NCS-vegan = products comply with the NCS-standard and the ingredients do not come from or are derived from animals – NCS-vegan-Organic Quality = products comply with the NCS-standard, are vegan and contain at least 95 % of ingredients from organic farming.
